Meet Kendall Allen

Hello! My name is Kendall Allen and I'm a freelance photographer at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Being at Bowie State has given me the opportunity to become more versatile with my photography giving me the platform to photograph sports, events, portraits, and even proms from exposure. However, my connection to photography began 4 years prior to coming to Bowie State. I picked up a camera in my freshman year at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. After using the cameras provided by the school, I found my love and passion for photography to grow. My work in high school comprised narrative pieces breaking down people and the way they think. The more comfortable I got with the camera, the more I pushed myself outside my comfort zone and began to put my name out there more by shooting events and sports.

 During my senior year, I was given an assignment in May 2023 called image and sound assignment that gave me the assignment of picking any song from any genre and turning the lyrics into images. For my choice of song, I chose Kendrick Lamar's song FEAR off his 2017 record DAMN. This song to me represents the fears of self doubt and fighting against it. Deciding to attend Bowie State University and majoring in psychology, I wanted to pursue my love of storytelling through photography. The image and sound assignment inspired me to really pursue my passion for storytelling through pictures, whether that's dissecting myself or others through personal life experiences or expressing who they are. 

I specialize in a variety of media such as sports, events, portraits, proms, lifestyle and more. However, the heart and soul of my work is storytelling through interviewing others and what makes them who they are as a person, community, or culture. Picking up a camera has given me a way to express myself and what I represent while bringing my visions to life and connecting with others on their vision.
